The Federal Government has said it will support the community midwifery scheme introduced by the Sokoto government to train local midwifes and traditional birth attendants in order to reduce maternal, infant and child morbidity and mortality in the state.
The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Folunsho Adewole, said this when he visited Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in Sokoto.
He said the FG’s support will come in the form of personnel and logistics to ensure the “success of the innovative” policy. According to the Minister, various policy interventions introduced by the Tambuwal administration will go go a long way in improving healthcare delivery in Sokoto State.
He urged Tambuwal to empower public institutions to carry out their assigned responsibilities, adding that relevant legislation should also be updated to meet present realities.
In his response, Tambuwal said his administration has resolved to deliver innovative community interventions that empower individual and communities, and lead to improved maternal and child health services in Sokoto State.
He said the trained midwifes and traditional birth attendants under the community midwifery scheme will serve at community levels in all parts of the state with their services readily available when the need arises.
