The Executive Director, Centre for Sustainable Development and Education in Africa (CSDEA), Theophilus Ekpon, has called on the federal government to invest more in the health sector.
He said the investment would work towards achieving the United Nations (UN) resolutions for all countries to provide universal access to healthcare without finacial hardship.Ekpon made this call in Abuja while speaking in an event marking the 2015 Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day celebration, which was the first time the event was marked in Nigeria.
Noting that Nigerian government only has plans for UHC in paper which is elusive in practice, Ekpon called on the governments at different levels to increase investments in the health sector. “Universal Health Coverage (UHC) means that every person, everywhere, has access to quality healthcare without suffering financial hardship,” he said.
The representative of Federal Ministry of Health and head, Health Financing and Equity, Department of Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr Francis Ukwuije, said the ministry was in support of the effort
towards achieving UHC.
