The war against hypertension got a boost in Lagos recently as Fight the Good Fight Against Hypertension (FITGAH) opened a clinic in Oregun, targeted at offering free blood pressure testing, as well as give half the price of hypertensive drugs to those diagnosed of the health issue.
The Managing Director, Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals Plc, Mr. Emmanuel Ekunno, while inaugurating the clinic, said the body decided to open the clinic, so as to encourage Nigerians to check their blood pressure, adding that, many Nigerians were still dying from the scourge due to lack of diagnosis, as most Nigerians do not know they are hypertensive.
According to him, as people become aware of their blood pressure status, those with high blood pressure would have informed choice on what to do, just as Neimeth Pharmaceuticals was also offering such persons drugs, half the price, so that even the poor would be able to treat themselves.
“Hypertension has no protocol, it does not know whether one is poor or rich, whether a governor or an ordinary man, that is why everyone must put conscious efforts in place to check their status. This is what FITGAH is offering to Nigerians through this clinic.
“Today, as we launch the clinic, anybody can walk in every Wednesday and be attended to free of charge. The clinic in the head office is also free and operates every Tuesday and Thursday. Ekunno noted that despite the fact that it was easier to import drugs to Nigeria than produce same, due to the various challenges faced, including power, Neimeth through the FITGAH programme has decided to give their hypertension drugs out at 50 per cent of the original price because of the importance it attached to the health and well being of Nigerians.
He called on Nigerians to see their wellbeing as their personal responsibility, hence the need to take charge of their health. “Anyone who is conscious of his or her health should know his or her blood pressure, as this is a major step to managing hypertension,” he added.
It would be recalled that recently, FITGAH, called on the Nigerian government, corporate organisations and well meaning Nigerians to support the gesture from Neimeth Pharmaceuticals, such that the already reduced price of hypertension drugs by half would be further subsidized so that hypertensive Nigerians, especially the poor ones can get the drugs free of charge, at a 100 per cent subsidised rate.
