The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) of Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia in Abia State, has embarked on strike.
The union’s demands include the payment of arrears of 2013 promotion, uniform allowance to the nurses, payment of all outstanding check-off-dues to the unions.
Addressing journalists, Comrade Okoro Ogbonnaya, who is also the state chairman, Medical and Health Workers Association, said the union had earlier given the government a 14-year-day ultimatum and another seven-year-ultimatum. “Based on management failure to keep their promise to pay up as agreed, we wish to declare that all JOHESU members have embarked on three days warning strike and if nothing is done to address the issues, we will as a matter of procedure commence indefinite strike,’’ he said.
When contacted, the Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, Dr. Chukwu Abali, confirmed the non payment of promotion arrears to members of staff promoted in 2013 but expressed hope that when the 2016 appropriation bill is signed into law, it will take care of all outstanding arrears.
He appealed to striking workers to dialogue with the management on how their demands could be settled.
“We are yet to receive funds for the payment of all the arrears and this position can be verified at the Federal Ministry of Health and the budget office. That is the position of management on this issue,’’ Abali said.
