Worried about the gap in cancer Treatment in Nigeria, Niger Foundation has procured the Roche Cobas e411 machine for better diagnosis and treatment of cancer and heart diseases even as it organised Continuing Medical Education, CME, for medical Practitioner in Enugu on the importance of effective diagnostic testing for cancer and Heart disease.
The Training with the theme "Use of Biomarker in Clinical Practice and Patient Care was organised in collaboration with ISN Products Limited.
In his Lecture, a Surgical Oncologist and Director of the Oncology Centre, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH Prof. E. Ezeome, explained that testing for tumour markers with such machine will ensure easy and accurate diagnisutc and better treatment for cancer Patient.
Ezeome said tumour markers have become increasingly important in cancer management as almost all cancers have biomarkers associated with them. He further emphasised that tests for tumour markers should be highly
sensitive and specific and that it isimportant that the testing laboratory uses high quality equipment and standardised kits to perform the tests in
order to minimise variation in test results by testing for these tumour markers on equipment such as the Cobas e411 acquired by Niger Foundation Hospital.
Also, a Consultant Physician and Cardiologist, UNTH, Dr. B. Anisuba who spoke on the use of cardiac markers in early diagnosis and management of patients with heart diseases listed ideal characteristics of effective cardiac marker test to include; accuracy, reproducibility, ease of interpretation by the doctor, high specificity and sensitivity, and availability of point of care testing.
