The Guinness Eye Centre, Lagos University Teaching hospital, LUTH, is providing free glaucoma screening to the public on March 10-12, 2015, from 9.00am to 4.00pm, in commemoration of the world Glaucoma Week.
The programme is part of the Hospital's Corporate Social Respomsibility geared towards helping to raise awareness abut glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness worldwide.
The general public is hereby invited to take part in this free exercise as early detection is one of the preventive measures to prevent blindness from the disease.
Glaucoma is serious problem with approximately 70 percent of the world's glacuoma patients being found in Africa.Primary Open Angle Glacuoma, POAG, is the most common form of glacuoma in Africa although it is estimated that the prevalence of this type of glacuoma is in the region of 0.5 percent of the population over the age of 40 due to limited whole population survey results causing underestimation of the true number.
