Gender Experts to Headline International Council of Nurses 2017 Congress

Katja Iversen and the Honourable Julia DuncanCassell. two high profile experts on gender will present at the International Council of Nurses’ (ICN) Congress in Barcelona, Spain, 27-30 May 2017.
 
Julia Duncan-Cassell, Liberian Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, is responsible for implementing and reviewing Liberia’s National Action Plan on the UN Security Council Resolution on Women, Peace and Security. Her w ork also includes a strong focus on reducing sexual violence. Throughout her sixyear tenure as Superintendent (akin to state governor) of Grand Bassa County in Liberia, Duncan-Cassell worked closely with local communities and particularly with women living in rural areas to stimulate business in the region. In this strategically important county, she ensured that development funds were used to reduce poverty, provide job opportunities, and improve county residents’quality of life.
 
At the ICN Congress, Duncan-Cassell, will speak on her experience developing sustainable solutions for the people of Liberia and her work to empower women In addition, she will participate in a panel discussion that will allow delegates the opportunity to raise questions. Katja Iversen, President & Chief Executive Officer of Women Deliver, is an internationally recognised expert on development, advocacy and communications with more than 20 years of experience working in NGOs, corporates and United Nations’ agencies. Previously, she held the position as Chief of Strategic Communication and Public Advocacy with UNICEF, a position she came to after almost six years of leading the team responsible for advocacy and communication on reproductive health and MDG 5 at UNFPA. Iversen has worked in global health for more than a 2 decade and has an extensive network within the UN, development communities and global media. She is a health adviser to the Clinton Global Initiative and on the CSO consultative group to the World Bank.
 
As a leading global advocate for investment in the health, rights and wellbeing of girls and women, Iversen will address participants of the ICN Congress on the well-being of the healthcare workforce and its relationship to high quality healthcare services. The two women join an ever growing panel of high profile speakers who have confirmed their participation in the ICN Congress – the largest gathering of nurses in the world.
