REGISTRAR, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, Pharm. Elijah Mohammed has said that pharmacists can improve patient care by adopting good pharmacy practices as outlined by the World Health Organisation. 

 

He made this disclosure while speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2015 Pharmacy Week of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Lagos State branch, recently. He explained that "a good pharmacy practice is the practice of pharmacy that responds to the needs of the people who use the pharmacists' service to provide, optimal, evidence based care." 

 

He noted that a good pharmacy practice will not only better the pharmacy council but the federal government of Nigeria as well. 

 

 "The aim of observing good pharmacy practice is to contribute to the health improvement and to help patients with health problems to make use of medicines while serving as a guide for pharmacists' in practice." Pharm. Gbenga Olubowale reiterated that the pharmacy week is an enlightenment program of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria "It is geared towards sustaining and improving the health values of the general populace at all times. The annual programme equally serves as a veritable avenue for decorating and enlightening pharmacists, health professionals, government and the general public on issues pertaining to health." 

 

 

According to Olubowale the choice of the theme was so apt, as the basis of all pharmaceutical intervention is, "Good Pharmacy Practice". 

 

He said adopting the concept of good pharmacy practice will guarantee that the consuming public gets the best from the pharmacist at all times. 

 

The event was used as an avenue to inaugurate the Council of Merit Award Winners (COMA W) of the Lagos State Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, an idea which Olubowale said he hoped will bring together all merit award winners of PSN Lagos to start working together for the good of Lagos in particular and the society at large.
