Abuja — THE leadership of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) has been called upon to call off the industrial action, which has partly paralyzed activities in many government hospitals across the country.
Supervising Minister of Health, Dr. Khaliru Alhassan, pleaded with the workers to call of the strike in the overall interest of the nation.
Deputy Director (Press) at the Ministry, Clement Egbeama, said in a statement yesterday that Alhassan spoke when he commissioned some completed projects and equipment at the National Orthopedic Hospital Igbobi and the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba.
The minister stressed the place of unity in the health sector, noting that the festive session was at hand and how the expected inflow of people into the country called for greater alertness at the entry points.
"The function of all health workers is required to screen people at the border post for Ebola. As long as there is Ebola out there , Nigeria stands the risk of being affected again", he noted.
He stressed: "The health sector operates as a team; as a result, all parts must function harmoniously to get the best out of the system."
He assured the striking workers, however, that the Federal Government was currently involved in an "intense negotiation with their leadership and that all their demands are being looked into and will be met."
Speaking on the project, the minister commended the two institutions for their efforts.
Medical Director of the National Orthopedic Hospital, Dr. Olurotimi Odunubi said that funds for the three projects in the hospital (new pharmacy building, new Out-Patient Clinic and the Staff Recreation Centre) were internally generated.
He thanked the minister for his support, but requested more fund as a lot still needs to be done in the institution.
On his part, Medical Director of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Dr. Raheem Lawal, said the diagnostic laboratory being commission was as a result of the Public Private Partnership (PPP) between the institution and Total E&P. He stressed how the laboratory would assist in improving the services of the institution.
