The three tiers of government in the country have been urged to provide leadership for the country’s health care sector.
The Chair, Health Partners International, (HPI) Bryan Haddon made this declaration last weekend during the meeting of health experts organized by Health Partners International in collaboration with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and other partners in Abuja.
He said the major problem in the health sector is that local government areas which are responsible for delivering the main services are still struggling to do so, adding that it was part of the reasons they convened the meeting in order to pull efforts together on identifying the reasons and the way forward.
He said despite of the progress made in the country, there are millions of Nigerians who are not getting the health services they require. Haddon said that HPI has been supporting local indigenous organizations in Nigeria with expertise in health sector financing, capacity building, government policy’s reforms and health systems strengthening, among others in the last 20 years. In addition he said inspite of the insecurity challenges in the north, the organization was able to reduce maternal mortality, and the death of children under five by half.
Also speaking Dr Emmanuel Sokpo health systems have been fragmented and there is no coordination between the various levels of government and organizations thereby leading to duplication and ineffective delivery.
