Nigerian Health Watch and One Campaign groups are finalizing plans to mobilize one million Nigerians to engage the Federal Government over the state of health in the country. Nigeria Country Representatives, One Campaign, Edwin Ikhuoria said the effort is aimed at informing government of the degree of poor state of health in the nation.
He added that the protest is also intended to help awaken majority of citizens of the country whom he said had been too silent on the state of health across the nation. At a forum in Abuja, tagged “Making Our Voices Count: Active Citizenship for Health,” the groups called for the implementation of the National Health Act to guarantee effective and satisfactory health service delivery in the nation.
Joined by Health Reform Foundation, HERFON, Christian Aid, Education as a Vaccine, BudgIT, the groups said citizens of the country had been too silent on activities within the sector, and that they unknowingly pay for not speaking out by obtaining poor services. Ikhuoria said the campaign he is leading would focus on making government implement the National Health Act and fulfil 2001Abuja Declaration among African leaders where 15 percent of national budget was agreed to be committed to their health systems. In his remarks, Chairman, Board of Trustees, HERFON, Dr. Ben Anyene, said despite all efforts by stakeholders to change health system in the country for common good, successive governments had been resistant to such change. He said what is more important is not approval of certain percent of annual budget to the nation’s health system but assurance that funds released are used for desired purposes.
Anyene, who chaired the session, blamed “weak” health system in the country on insensitivity by successive governments. Discussants at the forum also examined other challenges that had bedevilled the nation’s health, such as massive corruption, strikes, inadequate human resources among others.
