Gunmen have kidnapped two medical doctors in different parts of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
The abducted doctors were identified as Dr. Isaac Opurum and Dr. Ib Aprioku, male and female respectively.
While Opurum, who is the Director, Community House Services, Rivers State Primary Healthcare Board, was abducted at about 3am from his Port Harcourt residence; Aprioku, who works with the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital, was kidnapped on her way to church on Sunday.
The hoodlums had broken into Opurum’s residence, forced their way into his inner room before whisking him away to an unknown destination. For Aprioku, it was learnt that the armed bandits had waited for her around the church before she was kidnapped, even as her children were abandoned in her vehicle.
It was gathered that the development had caused tension and anger among members of the Nigerian Medical Association.
The NMA, Rivers State Chapter, lamented that 21 of its members were abducted in 2015 and threatened to withdraw medical services if nothing was done to ensure Opurum and Aprioku’s release after 48 hours.
The State NMA Chairman, Dr. Furo Green, condemned the increasing level of kidnapping, adding that most of the abductions were targeted at doctors in the state.
Green observed that the ugly trend had put fear in the minds of doctors in the state, disclosing that most of them were afraid to report to their offices.
He pointed out that some members of the families of the victims, who paid ransoms for their kidnapped relatives to regain freedom had yet to repay the money borrowed to pay ransom several months after.
The state NMA chairman, however, urged government and security agencies to ensure the unconditional release of the two doctors.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, said investigation had begun into the two incidents with a view to ensuring the release of the victims and arresting the culprits behind the dastardly act.
