Agynaecologist and director of Olives Specialist Clinic and Fertility Centre, Ado Ekiti, Dr Adebayo Adeniyi, has canvassed coverage of In-vitro fertilisation by the National Health Insurance Scheme to enable many Nigerians benefit from the procedure.

Adeniyi, who lamented that NHIS did not cover IVF in Nigeria as against what obtained in other countries, appealed to governments to spare a thought for those who would become happy parents through the process.

The gnaecologist, who spoke in Ado Ekiti while disclosing the feat that his clinic achieved on October 1 and 4, being the first to facilitate been able facilitate the birth of babies through IVF in the state, said, “As of today, this clinic is the only place where IVF is being done in Ekiti State.”

He said, “We have to assist in the birth six babies - three sets of twins - through the process now. The babies are very healthy. They are normal babies”.

Adeniyi, who said although his clinic considered the fact that Ekiti was a civil service state in its charges for IVF, added that the government could come to the rescue of Nigerians in dire need of assisted conception.

He said, “In the United Kingdom, the first two cycles of IVF are covered by NHIS, but it is not covered in Nigeria. IVF should be seen as an important thing, because to me, somebody who is barren is also sick. Either you like it or not, that person is not a normal person until he or she has his or her own children.

“If IVF can be placed under the NHIS, many more people will be able to access it because the cost will be taken off or reduced. With NHIS covering IVF, I can tell you that more people will be able to access it and of course benefit from the procedure.”

Adeniyi, who hinged his feat on determination, said, “People should decide and choose their areas of passion and pursue it with commitment. Without passion, success will be difficult.

“It is highly demanding. In Nigeria, for you to do IVF, you need uninterrupted power supply because the equipment must be swithed on for 24 hours. That is why there must be steady power supply,” he said.
