- Urges Hospital management to increase employment of only professionals in HIM Department

 

The registrar/Chief executive, Health Record Officers Registration Board of Nigeria (HRORBN), Alh. Mami Ibrahim Mohammed, while addressing the students of SHIM, OAUTHC, IFE during the symposium and opening programme of the annually-organized health week programme of the school, has maintained that health records is as old as medical practice, but the challenges of the profession lies on identity, as we are less recognized, compared with our contemporaries. This is not deliberate, he said, but as a result of less-value our leaders give to data, but things are getting better. 

 

He posited that, change in all ramifications is not something any of our political leaders can achieve alone, but it should start from us 

 

He maintained that the board is aware, the rigors graduates of health information management are passing through on employment, he said the problem is not about lack of vacancies, but as a result of employers of labour not being able to do things right. He reaffirmed his commitment and that of the board in ensuring that justice is done as far as that is concerned

 

He encouraged the students to acclimatize with technological advancement and change by learning how to use computers in management of patients. He further urged that students should go extra mile in getting this done, aside from the normal academic arrangement of the school. 

 

He felicitated with the management and students of SHIM, OAUTHC, having scaled through the hurdles of accreditation by the National board of technical education, health record officers' registration board of Nigeria as well as recognition by the NYSC. 

 

He appealed to the management of OAUTHC, to look into the area of staffing in HIM department, urging them to employ trained professionals so as to ensure things are done rightly. More with, he implored that professionals should as well be employed to teach HIM students and he also urged that the hospital should improve in the provision of academic materials to the school. 

 

The registrar encouraged students to prepare very well, for the forthcoming licensing examination, stating the reformation of the examination timetable, from being one day to four days. 

 

While talking about issues that concern HIM and the professionals, He mentioned that a memorandum has been sent to the National Council of establishment, which after favorable consideration, would propel professionals to attaining the apex and top echelon level and position in the civil service. This will also put a stop to the employment of non-professionals in various HIM departments of hospitals across the nation.
