Primary health workers in Adamawa State yesterday took to the streets to protest non payment of their two months’ salary.
The protesters who gathered at Ladi Atiku Centre in Yola, demanded the removal of the Executive Chairman of the agency, Dr Abdullahi Belel.
They also accused Chairman of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) in the state, Jeremiah Ngwakwar, of neglect.
Spokesman of the protesters, Halilu Ahmed, argued that that since the establishment of Primary Healthcare Development Agency, workers’ welfare has not been given due attention.
“Salary is not regular and we are yet to know our actual salary structure as our salaries keep fluctuating”, Ahmed said.
In his response, Executive Chairman of the agency, Dr Abdullahi Belel, attributed the failure to pay salaries to dwindling revenue.
Belel said due to deductions from the local government monthly allocation, they could no longer meet the salary bill of N300 million.
Appealing for patience and understanding from workers, the chairman said the committee set up by the state government for staff verification is one of the measures being taken to resolve the problem.
