The National President of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Comrade Biobelemoye J. Josiah has appealed to the Federal Government to disregard calls for the privatization of public healthcare delivery services.
Josiah was speaking yesterday at the commissioning of the union’s permanent secretariat located at Durumi, Abuja.
The secretariat was named “Ayuba Wabba House” after the current President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
He said the privatization of public health institutions would cause untold hardship to millions of poor Nigerians.
According to him, the union is constrained to raise its voice against the early push to consolidate a neoliberal agenda in the health sector by some experts who have never borne the burden of want and deprivation confronting tens of millions of Nigerians.
The president accused those calling for the privatization of hospitals of first destroying them and then hiding under the guise of privatization to cover up their corrupt deeds.
He also commended President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to salvaging the nation, particularly in the spirited fight against corruption and insurgency in the North East.
Also speaking, President of the National Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba said he was overwhelmed by the honour done to him by the health workers union and urged the leadership to sustain the momentum.
Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomole who was the Guest of Honour commended the union for their prudent application of resources saying if it were in a government ministry, the building of the secretariat would have exceeded the N1.2 billion cost.
He urged the NLC not to shield corrupt workers, saying “the battle line has been drawn and it is either you are against corruption or you are for it.”
