•FG upgrades FMC, signs MoU with ABUAD
Following the nationwide strike embarked upon by the health workers under the umbrella of Joint Health Staff Union, the Supervising Minister of Health, Dr. Khaliru Alhassan, has raised the alarm over the possible resurgence of Ebola in Nigeria.
Alhassan, who praised President Goodluck Jonathan, for tackling the dreaded virus and making an Nigeria Ebola-free nation, said the indefinite strike action embarked upon by JOHESU at a time when many Nigerians would return home from abroad to celebrate Christmas and New year, was dangerous for the nation.
The minister expressed the fear in Ido Ekiti at the weekend at the upgrading of Federal Medical Centre, Ido Ekiti to a Federal Teaching Hospital and the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the federal government and Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), Ado Ekiti.
The memorandum followed the building of a N2 billion worth of clinical complex by the owner of ABUAD, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), in the hospital as part of the requirements by Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the running of medicine and surgery.
Babalola and the Chief Medical Director of the tertiary health institution, Dr. Majekodunmi Ayodele, commended President Jonathan for embracing Public Private Partnership (PPP) in the health sector, saying the singular act would reposition the sector in the country.
The minister, who appealed to the striking workers to display patriotism said: “During this time, health workers would have to be on guard at the airport to screen those that will be coming in and to perform other routine work. We cannot afford to be caught unawares as witnessed in the past.
“Though we have no single case of Ebola now in Nigeria, this is the time Nigeria must be very vigilant to ensure that the virus is not brought back to our country because of issues we can handle with understanding .
“The federal government through our ministry has been meeting with the workers and we can settle the issues internally through dialogue even while they resume for work. We appeal to them to put the interest of this nation at first,” the minister pleaded.
He described the MoU with ABUAD as the first of its kind in the health sector in Nigeria, saying, “ABUAD is a trail blazer because since the discussion on this collaboration started, it became like a clarion call to other universities and our ministry has been bombarded with similar requests.”
Ayodele at the occasion, disclosed that the hospital has the best residency training in Nigeria, which he said goas long way to confirm that there won’t be compromise in standard and service delivery.
He described the new status as a product of hard work and dedication by his staff since the establishment of the medical centre in 1999.
“Today, this 300-beded hospital can boast 65 full-time consultants in various fields of medical specialties and had been accredited in eight medical departments by both National and West African Post Graduate Medical Colleges to train resident Doctors.
“We are gathered here today because of a singular efforts of Babalola, who refused to be discouraged by the brick wall he met on the way towards achieving the great feat,” he said.
