A splinter group has dissociated itself from the 14-day strike ultimatum given to the Adamawa State Government by the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN).
A statement by the Chairman of the union, Jeremiah Ngyakwar had issued the government two weeks ultimatum to pay two months outstanding salaries of health workers, fully implement the CONHESS salary scale and pay check up dues of members to the union or face a strike action.
The statement also called for the sack of the Chairman, Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Abdullahi Belel. Addressing journalists in Yola yesterday, a group of union members led by Dahiru Hassan described the ultimatum as illegal, saying a court order had nullified the executive, for which reason they had no right to call for strike.
Calling on government to disregard the strike threat, the group urged the Primary Health Care Agency (PHCDA) to continue withholding workers’ check-up dues from the union and pay the monies directly to workers.
However, the chairman of MHWUN, Jerimiah Ngyakwar insisted that the ultimatum remained effective, accusing government of using the check-up dues to frustrate the union and turn members against the leadership. He insisted that promotion had been stagnated for the past 15 months while non-implementation of the new salary scale affected health workers in the state.
