A participant from Kaduna State shares information on quality care in hospital at the meeting of hospital heads organised by NAHSS, FMOH and Institute of Human Vinology in Nigeria Abuja recently.
Experts have enjoined heads of facilities, and chief medical directors of hospitals to be actively involved in the HIV/AIDs services in their hospitals in order to improve quality of care.
They gave the advice during the recent meeting of heads of tertiary and secondary hospitals in Abuja organized by the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s Nigerian Alliance for Health Systems Strengthening (NAHSS) project in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, and the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria.
About 90 heads of tertiary and secondary hospitals in the country have been meeting in batches in Abuja and Calabar within the one week to strategize on improving the quality of HIV care and treatment services provided for people living with the disease.
Director of Epidemiology and Prevention, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Professor Man Charurat, said without true leadership in a health facility, change cannot happen, adding that both chief medical directors, and head of facilities are expected to be part of that leadership in order to achieve good quality programme. Charurat, who is also working with the ministry of health in implementing the Nigeriaqual said CMDs should also use data to work with the team in creating an enabling environment for change in quality HIV care.
Nigeriaqual, an NAHSS project, is the nationally standardized quality management program adopted by the Federal Ministry of Health.
Speaking on the benefit of leadership on quality service delivery, Medical Director, General Hospital, Suleja, Dr Adebayo Adedokun, said they achieved improvement of clinical care indicators from a an average low score of 17% to 54%, among others.National coordinator , HIV/ AIDs programme, Federal Ministry of health, Dr Evelyn Ngige said the quality improvement programme started in 2007 with support from the State Department for Health, New York because they realised the need to effectively scale up HIV/AIDs services at the grassroots because most of our population reside there and access care at the lower levels.
NAHSS Project Director, Mrs. Chinenye Ugoji said the engagement of leadership of hospitals and government in delivery of high quality patient care and clinic processes is pivotal to building a sustainable culture of high standards in Nigeria’s health care system.
