How to Prevent Kidney Damage, by Expert

How best can one avoid damaged kidneys? It is by taking water regularly and controlling diabetes and hypertension, a. senior consu1tant nephrologtst at Apollo Hospitals, India, Prof Dravendra Agarwal, has said. 
 
Speaking during the Continuing Medical Education (CME) for Physicians in Lagos, he said people should also guide against indiscriminate use of drugs, especially non­ steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). 
 
The training was organised by the hospital with its partner in Nigeria - Diamond Helix Medical Assistance Limited. 
 
Agarwal said people should not exceed a doctor's prescription. "If people feel they have symptoms of kidney failure, they should consult a nephrologist because kidney ailments can be cured if treatment is in getting treatment increases the chances of the kidneys that leads to irreversible damage," he said. . 
 
Agarwal urged the people to report to their doctor anytime they experience symptoms, such as swelhng of the body, decrease in appetite and recurring vomiting or nausea as these may be signs of kidney failure. Others a:e anaemia (reduction in blood haemoglobin level, weakening of bones, fatigue or weakness, high blood pressure and breath­ lessness as well as reduction in urine formation. 
 
He said these later symptoms usually develop when the two kidneys are damaged. 
 
This is because If one kidney is removed from a gerson, he or she can still lead his or her life with the other healthy kidney with normal renal parameters," Dr Agarwal said. 
 
People, he said, should do kidney tests to know their kidney state, adding that this would help in early detection of any problem. 
 
He said lifestyles, diabetes, hypertension, smoking and alcohol could pre-dispose people to chronic kidney disease (CKD). 
 
The expert urged the people to shun poor diet, smoking and alcohol as well as excessive salt intake, among others. . 
 
He Said effort was being made to focus on prevention of CKD than treatment. 
 
"Prevention is important.This is because in the event of the disease, dialysis and kidney transplant cannot be ruled out. And these do not come cheap. They involve a lot of money and regular ho.spital visits," Agarwal said. 
 
He told the kidney patients to exercise precaution in their diet. 
 
"They should take less salt, milk, tea and water according to their urine. Patients s.hould also avoid juicy fruits nd take pulp like apple, pawpaw and guava but in small quantity. 
 
"They should take leafy and green vegetables only after draining the water in which they are boiled. Patients should also take less amount of protein, such as meat, pulses and milk, among others. If protein intake of pa­ tient is high, he or she should take between two to three spoons of oil or ghee daily." 
 
The recommended food, he said, are barley, wheat and rice.  Others are bitter gourd, pear, apple and guava. 
 
"But salted chips, pickles, tin .food commercial soft drinks, sea food, salted fried snacks, salt and sauce should be avoided" Agarwal added. '
