The Secretary-General, Nigeria Medical Association, Dr. Adewunmi Alayaki, has called on the Federal Government to implement the White Paper on the Yayale Ahmed report, concerning the health sector.

Alayaki made the appeal in an interview with our correspondent in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

According to him, implementing the report will go a long way in checking professional rivalries and incessant strikes in the sector.

He said, “The Federal Government must implement the White Paper on the Yayale Ahmed report without further delay. This is the only way to forestall professional rivalry and incessant strike in the health sector.

“The White Paper would have spelt out the duties, expectations and career prospects of each line of profession in the health sector.”

He also noted that it was high time the government spelt out job descriptions for the affected professionals.

Alayaki said, “If all of these are there, there will be less friction. It is wrong for any arm of the health sector to see another arm as a threat. Health care delivery is teamwork. Nobody is overriding anybody.

“A nurse can rise to the peak of her career by becoming the director of nursing services. This can also be possible for other professionals in the sector.”

On the loss incurred during the just-ended strike embarked upon by the Joint Health Sector Unions, Alayaki described it as unquantifiable.
