As part of efforts to consolidate on the success of its Adolescent and Youth Friendly Programme, Ondo State Government is to establish a well being clinic for young people at the State Specialist Hospital, Akure.
The Health Commissioner, Dr Dayo Adeyanju dropped the hint at a briefing in Akure to mark this year’s International Youth Day.
Dr Dayo Adeyanju described the period of adolescent as a phase where young people need to make informed choices based on right information which was why the State initiated the Adolescent and Youth Friendly Health Programme with a view to supporting and advising youths on their health status.
“We are also retraining our health workers on the need to be friendly to these young people who come for counselling on their reproductive health issues. From the gate man, to the apex health worker, their disposition would determine whether their patients would come back or not”
The Health Commissioner expressed the readiness of his Ministry to a multi sectoral approach to partner it’s Education, Information and Culture counterparts with a view to infusing into the schools curricular reproductive health issues.

”There’s no question about the fact that our youths are susceptible to pyschosubstance abuses, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and other related ills in the society that have necessitated a holistic action plan” Adeyanju explained.
“The well-being clinic will soon be commissioned, and is not limited to the sick, but also healthy people who will be given proper orientation on their health status.” he added
The Health Commissioner revealed that the Ministry has been utilising Information Communication Technology (ICT), especially cellphones to reach out to the people and familiarize the youths with numerous health programmes and sensitization technologically.
Dr. Adeyanju, who assured that government would continue to create enabling environment for young people also urged them to always engage themselves in things that would make them become great in life.
He disclosed that government has employed a lot of young people into all its health facilities and institutions adding that the State University of Medical Sciences in Ondo currently offering postgraduate studies in obstetrics and gynaecology, will start in October by admitting direct entry students only for this year.
