BENIN—FEDERAL Government-owned Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua, Edo State, has recorded a medical feat after it successfully carried out medical surgery on hips and knees replacement on some of its patients.
The hospital’s surgical team leader, Dr. C.O Nwokike, who made these achievements public yesterday during the hospital’s quarterly seminar, presented graphic details of how the surgery which lasted over nine hours in the case of the knee replacement, was carried out.
He told the audience which included the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Sylvanus Akhalufo Okogbenin, and other senior management staff, how they succeeded in the operation despite constraints of lack of modern equipment.

Nwokike explained that when the total hip surgery was carried out, it took almost the same effort to avert errors, saying at the end of it all success was recorded.
Earlier, Professor S.O. Abbah, a consultant in Public Health and Professor J.E. Onuminya, a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, expressed delight over the achievement.
Supervising Physician in charge of the Ubiaja Comprehensive Health Centre, donated by Senator Odion Ugbesia, to Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, as an extension of the hospital, Dr. A. Ajekwene, told the audience that the hospital had been developed to an enviable height.
He said that the confidence the host community and adjoining communities had on the Health Centre spoke volumes because of the hospital’s quality service delivery.
Those present at the event were the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Sylvanus Akhalufo Okogbenin; Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Wilson Ovienria; the Director of Administration, Mr. Tony Edeko and the Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Christopher Afusin.
