The Jigawa State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abba Zakari Umar, yesterday said the state government would soon send 50 students to China to study Medicine.
The commissioner said at a news conference in Dutse that the state governor would lead a delegation to China to attend a medical equipment fair in Qinagxou.
“We will be there to see the equipments and negotiate how we can purchase some for our hospitals. We will also seek to collaborate with some universities in China in the area of training of our medical students. Our intention is to train equal number of male and female medical students from the state,” he said. He added that the state was also embarking on training of personnel to man the equipment, adding that the governor had directed that the medical students would be selected from across the state. The commissioner said part of the criteria for selecting beneficiaries of the programme is that the student must be brilliant but can’t afford higher education. Umar told journalists that a selection examination would be conducted for the purpose.
