Strong indications emerged at the weekend that the over two-month-old strike embarked upon by the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) may be suspended this week.
The optimism is premised on the perceived outcome of the meeting the leadership of the union has scheduled with President Goodluck Jonathan to finalise on issues preparatory to the suspension of the strike.
The officials of JOHESU headed by their President, Ayuba Waba; Vice President, Felix Faniran, and other key officials, as at Saturday afternoon, were in Abuja waiting to see President Goodluck Jonathan for the long-awaited meeting.
A top official of JOHESU, who is among those waiting to meet with the President, disclosed this to Sunday Independent in Abuja, on Saturday.
Our source, who preferred anonymity, said the meeting was earlier scheduled for last week, but that the involvement of the president in the on-going political campaigns dragged it till now.
According to him, “If we are able to reach him today, we are optimistic that we will be able to end the matter.
“This is because when we met last on December 22 with the Minister of State for Health, he was supposed to meet the president and present what we decided to him; it is only the president we are waiting for now.
“If we reach him today, we will tell him what is left and tell him to sign. If he is able to sign, then we suspend the strike.
“We are still waiting for him, he is on campaign tour; but, his aides are asking us to hold on and we are still holding on.
“We will still be here today and tomorrow and see what happens. We have been waiting since last week.
“He said we should see him in Lagos and we went there. But, because of some pressing national issues, he apologised that we should see him in Abuja and we are still in Abuja here.
“We are waiting and we want to be seen on our part that we have cooperated with him.”
