The industrial dispute by the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) has taken yet another dimension as the striking workers have taken to street processions to protest the hospital’s decision to stop their salaries.
The workers told the speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly during a procession there that they were not paid their April salaries because the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Professor Edmond Banwat invoked the “No Work, No Pay” policy.
The decision came barely a week after the national executives of JOHESU visited, and took over the strike after expressing dissatisfaction with Professor Banwat for allegedly reneging on all agreements with the workers in a twist that has prolonged the strike even after the congress resolved on calling it off. Yesterday’s street procession took the workers through major roads, to the state assembly complex, and the palace of the paramount ruler, and Government House, to register their grievances over the decision, which they say can only aggravate the industrial dispute.
Led by their chairman and secretary, Comrade Mustapha Kabiru, and Pharm Samfi Pius Kesuwo respectively, hundreds of placard-bearing protesters, all dressed in black attire to demonstrate their anger, marched the streets chanting anti-JUTH management slogans.
They comprised over 900 members of Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), over 600 members of National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), over 300 of Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP); and over 300 of Medical and Health Workers’ Union (MHWUN).
