Johns Hopkins' nursing school is No. 1 in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report's new rankings of graduate programs. The university's doctor of nursing practice program ranks second.

The school also has the second best medical school for research in the country, according to U.S. News, trailing only Harvard University.

U.S. News & World Report compiles annual lists of the country's Best Graduate Schools across six disciplines: business, education, engineering, law, medicine and nursing. The purpose of the list is to help prospective graduate school students get a better picture of the best education options in their chosen field. Hopkins, University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) are the state's two most consistently ranked schools in the state.
Maryland institutions made the best showings overall in health care-related categories.

“It is always nice to be ranked highly, but more importantly, we have always in our 125-year history been committed to training the best physicians and physician-scientists here at Johns Hopkins,” Paul B. Rothman, dean of the medical faculty and CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine, said in a statement.

UMB's medical school led state institutions in the rankings for best primary care programs, coming in at No. 21. Hopkins ranked No. 26 in this category. UMB also ranked at No. 31 on the medical schools list in the research category.

UMB made the best Doctor of Nursing Practice and Master's of Nursing lists, at No. 8 and No. 13, respectively. One other Maryland school, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, also ranked on the nursing lists this year, at No. 36 for its Doctor of Nursing Practice program and No. 60 for its master's program.
