Having observed with deep concern that the ethics of the nursing profession are gradually eroding, the Director of Nursing Services in Kaduna State Ministry of Health, Salamatu Y. Washiri, has urged nurses and midwives to jealously guard and preserve the ethics of their profession.
She made this known at the nurses summit organised by the Directorate of Nursing Services in Kaduna.
Washiri stressed that the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) must intensify effort to ensure that the ethics are preserved.
“On our part, the Directorate of Nursing Services in the Ministry has constituted two standing committees namely: The Nursing and Midwifery Committee and The Quality Assurance Committee.
These committees visit health facilities to ensure that patients receive health care services and are saddled with the responsibility of checking quackery and ensuring that all requirement of accreditation of health institutions in the state are met and sustained.
They also deal with cases of unethical practices and disciplinary cases in general.”
“The nursing profession is a noble one, the profession cares for the plight of the unfortunate people. The nurse is the patient’s advocate, thus, the quality of care and relationship which the nurse cultivates extend to patients’ recovery from illness and eventual well being,” she explained.
The summit tagged ‘Nursing: a force for change, a vital resource for health’ is a broad based initiative intended to involve all nurses and relevant stakeholders.
