A laboratory scientist, Mr Kehinde Adegoke, has urged federal and state governments to partner with manufacturers in the procurement of laboratory equipment to enforce standard.
Speaking with our correspondent, Adegoke, a former Chairman, Senior Staff Association of University Teaching Hospital, Research Institute and Associated Institutions (SSAUTHRIAI), LUTH chapter said, involving the manufacturers in the procurement process entailed the government being involved in direct negotiation on the supply of the equipment to reduce their cost.
He added that ultimately, it would make laboratory services affordable to patients and save many lives through proper diagnosis.
“Government needs to involve the manufacturers of medical laboratory equipment, through a partnership as in the developed countries, because the cost of procuring the equipment is enormous. What is obtainable in advanced countries is that they don’t really buy this equipment, what they do is equipment placements. They arrange with the manufacturer to supply the equipment.
“They buy consumables and reagents from the manufacturers and also sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will make them to be responsible for maintenance and repairs of the equipment.”
He suggested that government should follow the model of partnership with the manufacturers in placing medical equipment in the hospital and creating a revolving fund for the purchase of consumables and reagents.
“Once medical laboratory test is affordable, patients will be encouraged to give premium on their health since they know their interest will be adequately protected,” Adegoke said, adding that the current arrangement put in place by majority of the health institutions in the country was not good enough for the masses and a drain on their purse.
