The Chairman, FCT chapter of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, Mr Ndubuisi Ebitea, has advised the federal government to pay more attention to medical laboratory practice in the country.
Ebitea made the call at the weekend at an event to commemorate the World Biomedical Laboratory Science Day in Abuja.
He said government could do this by enhancing medical laboratory infrastructure and improving the welfare of medical laboratory professionals by providing them insurance cover and enhancing their hazard allowance. The chairman also urged government and the National Assembly to quickly pass the bill for the establishment of the National Postgraduate Medical Laboratory Science College, saying it would contribute to the training of specialists in medical laboratory science.
Meanwhile, the association has advised members to always consider the safety of patients in every health facility throughout the country.
In a statement to mark this year’s Biomedical Laboratory Science Day, the National President, Alhaji Toyosi Y Raheem and National Public Relations Officer, Adeyeye Adetunji Tam, urged medical laboratory scientists in Nigeria to remember that the World Health Organization’s (WHO) concept of quality healthcare places the patient at the centre of the circle, and that all health professionals should focus on patients, thinking about how to serve them with the best, professional healthcare services possible.
