Doctors in Lagos State hospitals yesterday resumed work, having suspended their 10-day old strike. The decision to call off the strike was based on the promise by the state government to remit the withheld doctors salaries immediately after the election.
President of the Medical Guild, Lagos State branch, Dr. Biyi Kufo, disclosed to National Mirror that the guild finally reached an agreement with the Lagos government, following a closed door session with the Health Commissioner, Dr. Jide Idris, and his Special Duties counterpart, Dr Wale Ahmed, on Tuesday.
According to Kufo, the Health commissioner had assured them of the state government’s pledge to pay the withheld May 2012 and August, September 2014 doctor’s salaries, after the elections.
Kufo said the commissioner also promised that the issue of residency training will be solved soon.
“The policy paper regarding the residency training had been completed and would be submitted to the governor, for consideration.
“The process would soon be completed, and there would be an ad-hoc arrangement for intake of residents into LASUTH before the completion.
“The issue of the employment of doctors as casual workers remains contentious. The Honourable Commissioner stated that government would continue to examine our proposals,” he said.
Based on this, the Medical Guild, Lagos Branch and Nigeria Medical Association, NMA Lagos, jointly agreed to call off the strike.
However, “the situation will be reviewed two weeks after the governorship elections in April, 2015,” Kufo said.
It would be recalled that Lagos doctors under the aegis of the medical guild, on March 16, went on indefinite strike protesting the alleged engagement of doctors as casual workers and the withholding of doctors’ salaries for May 2012 and August to September 2014, over the doctors involvement in industrial action.
