With efforts to combat the burden of cancer in Nigeria, Lakeshore Cancer Center has partnered with Roswell Park Cancer Institute, New York, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and PathCare Laboratories.
Cancer is one of the biggest issues in Nigeria as more than 102,000 new cases are diagnosed every year, with more than 70 per cent of patients dying from the disease.
Speaking at a press conference recently, the chief executive officer, Lakeshore Cancer Center, Chukwumere Nwogu, said the companies are coming together with a common passion for providing world-class cancer care and the joint vision of improvement in cancer prevention, early detention, treatment and palliation in Nigeria and throughout West Africa.
Nwogu said the partnership came at the right time as there have been crisis in terms of radiation treatment in Nigeria.
He said, “There are about nine radiation centres in Nigeria and in any given time, we may have only two that will be functioning. This is a very difficult problem for a country with over 170 million people.”
He however assured that the partnership will foster a strong base to tackle and control the rising incidence of cancer in Nigeria.
Chief of strategy, business development and outreach, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Thomas Schwaab, said cancer battle can only be won with collaborative cancer care where both private and public health teams can work together.
Schwaab however urged private and public institutions to collaborate with Lakeshore Cancer Center on a comprehensive cancer system for all Nigeria cancer patients.
