As the Management of the Federal Teaching Hospital, (FETHI) Ido Ekiti, celebrates the discharge of a student of the School of Nursing, who contracted Lassa fever, the hospital management has rewarded the medical personnel and other staff, who volunteered treatment to the patient.
It has presented a certificate of excellence to an outstanding nurse, Mrs. Adejoke Awotona, and other members of the team.
Apart from this, the management also pleaded with the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, to reward the experts and designate the centre as a nationally-recognised diagnosis and management centre, in view of the achievement recorded there in saving the life of the Lassa fever patient. At a press conference, in Ido Ekiti, on Monday, marking the celebration of the medical breakthrough, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Lawrence Ayodele, declared that the medical personnel, who allegedly dodged their responsibility to be part of the team to treat the patient, would be sanctioned for professional misconduct.
The 19 -year old student of the FETHI’s School of Nursing, was rushed to the hospital a couple of weeks ago, having contracted Lassa fever – an infectious disease that has, in recent times, killed some Nigerians.
Ayodele said that, “This student was rushed into this hospital with high fever, bleeding from orifices. We wanted to reject him, because we don’t have the medical kits to undertake treatment here. But because we heeded the Minister’s directive not to transport Lassa fever patients, we, immediately, swung into action.
“Today, we have recorded a success story. The lady is tested negative to the virus and she has been discharged. We were able to achieve this feat because of the determination of our nurses and doctors. For anybody to lay down his life in spite of the poor facilities to treat the infection here, he deserves to be compensated, even if it is just presidential handshake.”
