Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria – Partnership For Advocacy in Child and Family Health, PSN-PACHFaH has taken advocacy visit to Kaduna State with focus on treatment of childhood diseases like pneumonia and diarrhoea.
The PSN which is the implementing partner in the PACFaH project is also focusing on supporting and encouraging the government to reduce the under-5 mortality rate and improving health outcomes for childhood pneumonia and diarrhoea in Nigeria.
The Nigerian country director, PSN-PACFaH, Mr Remi Adeseun and his team, who led the advocacy visit to the executive secretary, Kaduna State Primary Health Care Agency (KSPHCA), Dr Hadiza Balarabe Thursday in her office, disclosed that out of the 337,000 births recorded yearly in Kaduna State, 66,000 die before they reach the age of five. According to him, the PSN-PACFaH, which is an amalgam of eight civil society organisations (CSOs) and allied non- governmental organisations, (NGOs), said the 2013 Nigerian Demographic Health Survey (NDHS ) in Kaduna State also showed that for every 1,000 live-births, 185 die before their 5th birthday and all from preventable and treatable diseases, such as malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea.
“Most of the aforementioned deaths are from preventable and treatable diseases such as malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea. The survey shows that diarrhoea and pneumonia account for 13% and 16%, respectively, of the under-5 mortality rate in Kaduna State.
