AN associate of the International Federation of Gynecologists and Obstetricians, Dr. Rafiu Ajiboye, has said that Nigeria has more than 10 per cent of global maternal deaths.
The medic, who described the situation as worrisome, regretted that most causes of the deaths were preventable.
Ajiboye, a past Secretary of the Nigeria Medical Association, Kwara State chapter, stated this on Tuesday in Ilorin, Kwara State.
According to him, with good policies, education and infrastructure, there will be substantial reduction of such deaths.
He said, "Nigeria has about 170 million people.
We are less than one per cent of world population of seven billion people.
But Nigeria has more than 10 per cent of maternal deaths globally. The sad story is that the deaths are preventable calamities that should not happen to humankind. I mean that all the causes of the maternal deaths are preventable."
Ajiboye, who urged professionals and stakeholders to be actively involved in policy formulation and execution, said the call was imperative for the country to attain required growth and development.
The medic, who is seeking to represent Ifelodun/Offa/ Oyun constituency in the House of Representatives, said if elected he would contribute to bringing about the necessary changes in the nation, especially in the health sector.
He noted that with proper education and reorientation of the people, there would be reduction in preventable deaths in the country.
He also canvassed 'a modification of the National Health Insurance Scheme.
He said, "Ninety per cent' of causes of deaths in Nigeria today are preventable. They are infectious diseases, as simple as malaria, gastro-enteritis, and road accidents.
