‘Nigerian in Ethiopian Prison Died of HIV’

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has stated that the death of a Nigerian, Mr Odemu Efe, in an Ethiopian prison, was caused by complications from HIV/AIDS.

It dismissed reports that Efe died of ill-treatment and malnourishment, noting that a death certificate issued by the Ethiopian health authorities attributed his demise to the disease.

The Head of Media, NIDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, explained in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday that the Nigerian Embassy in Ethiopia confirmed that the inmate had been ill and was taken to two different hospitals in Addis Ababa before he passed on.

It said, “A confirmation from the Nigerian Embassy in Ethiopia revealed that the former inmate had been seriously ill and taken to two different hospitals in Addis Ababa before he passed on.”

Also, contrary to a statement credited to one Miss Chika Nwachukwu, who accused Nigerian officials of showing lack of concern about the welfare of Nigerians in prison in Ethiopia, NIDCOM stated that the Nigerian High Commissioner, Amb. Adeoye Bankole, visited the inmates regularly.

It explained that Bankole visited the Kality Prison in January, 2019 and planned to visit Nigerian inmates again in August and September.

Reacting to the death, the Chairman of NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, condoled with the family of the late Mr Efe.

Efe was serving a five-year prison sentence in an Ethiopian prison after he was convicted for drug trafficking by an Ethiopian court. He had only served over a year before his demise.
