Stroke affects about 200,000 people in Nigeria yearly while 88,000 die in the first three months. The World Health Organisation (WHO) revealed this yesterday in commemoration of the World Stroke Day.
Chief Executive Officer, Stroke Action Nigeria, Rita Melifonwu, said the day focused on stroke risks and prevention. According to WHO, stroke is the global leading cause of disability and the second leading cause of death.
Globally, 87 per cent of both stroke-related deaths and disability occur in low- and middle-income countries, the United Nations body stated, adding that over the last four decades, stroke incidence had doubled in those countries.
