Health care experts in Bayelsa State say that mortality rate among women and children will fall below six per cent in the next five years with the sustenance of the United Nations Children Fund interventionist programmes.
The workers stated this when they converged on Oporoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area to assess UNICEF’s activities in the state in the last one year.
The council’s Head of Department, Health, Adolphus Enezigha, while acknowledging the role UNICEF, noted that its ‘Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week initiative’ had impacted positively on the lives of many children and women.
Enezigha stated that with UNICEF and World Health Organisation’s support, the state had been able to eradicate polio in its territory.
According to him, the chances of seeing those afflicted with disease, especially those less than five years old were zero in the state.
Enezigha’s counterpart at the Sagbama LGA, Mr. Tonkiri Tarebide, also stated that the council had contained cholera menace in the area with the collaboration of the state government and UNICEF.
Noting that the disease spreads due to lack of potable water, he called for the construction of more public toilets and boreholes in the council.
Another health expert from Southern Ijaw, Igoniwari Joel, scored UNICEF high, especially in its timely intervention in checking the cholera outbreak in the council.
