The Chief Medical Director, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Prof. Christopher Bode, has faulted the call for his retirement by the state chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association.
Bode, at a briefing in Lagos on Monday, said he had not violated any civil service rule regarding his appointment at the hospital.
He said, “Each CMD is appointed by the President and as far as the LUTH Act is concerned, that appointment carries no age limit. I am a professor at the University of Lagos. I am on leave of absence from the university.
“When I would have completed my tenure at LUTH, I shall return to UNILAG. The compulsory retirement age of professors used to be 65 in 2012; it has now been raised to 70 years.”
Bode also denied allegations that he was high-handed in the running of the hospital.
He said, “I want to state clearly that LUTH is secure and we are all carrying out our duties peacefully. If somebody has a case of assault within LUTH, it would be good for him to either seek redress through legal means or wait for the conclusion of the internal mechanisms for conflict resolution that we have in place.
“Some months ago, a doctor in this hospital assaulted another doctor. We dismissed that doctor within weeks because we have zero tolerance for assault. Currently, somebody is reporting a case of assault; I want to assure all that we have set up a panel of investigation to look into that allegation.”
The CMD accused doctors in the hospital of always embarking on arbitrary strikes at the detriment of their patients.
He said, “We had less than 200 patients on admission during the last six weeks strike and we told the doctors that if they didn’t work, we won’t pay them. If Nigerians are paying their salaries, the least they expect from them is the provision of quality service.
“You cannot continue receiving taxpayers’ money, while denying them their entitled medical services.”
