In realisation of the national medium and long term plans of the Federal government to establish a functional Biomedical Engineering Training Programme in the country, 18 students, representing nine Federal and state teaching hospitals, and private hospitals, have passed out of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, School of Biomedical Engineering.
At the graduating ceremony last week, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Amina Shamani, said the development was the culmination of an extended Memorandum of Understanding signed a year ago between the Ministry of Health, GE Foundation, Engineering World Health, EWH, and the LUTH for a three-yearperiod (2014-2017).
Shamani said components of the agreement were to create a nationally accredited and sustainable Biomedical Engineering Technician, BMET, training school and Centre of Excellence at the LUTH.

'The main objective is to strengthen human capital development, specifically for the healthcare technical workforce responsible of management of medical equipment in the various health facilities in Nigeria. 'There is no doubt there is a gap at present and we need to develop policies and plans to strengthen in-country towards ensuring that Nigerians are equipped with requisite technical skills and administrative know-how to effectively manage medical equipment in contemporary health systems in the country," she observed,
The Chief Medical Director, CMD, LUTH, Prof Chris Bode, said each of the graduating students successfully completed a thorough on-the-job professional trainingunderauspices of the GEF/EWH.
Describing the development as another good thing to happen to the health sector Bode said the Federal Government is encouraging participation of public and private institutions, because good health is not the exclusive preserve of any hospital.
''No one knows where they would get taken in the event of an accident, so all hospitals should have good equipment that is well maintained at all times."
In a statement, the Head of the LUTH Biomedical Training Centre, Prof Carmen Walker, said the programme takes its curriculum from Duke University in North Carolina, in the United States, and on Industry Standards for Biomedical Engineeringliaining. Walker said the goal is in saving equipment because by saving equipment, lives are being saved.
