Towards' improving eyecare among Nigerians, the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, has unveiled its newly acquired laser machine for the treatment of eye- related problerns.
Unveiling the equipment last week, the Chief Medical Director, LUTH, Professor Chris Bode, said many cases of blindness in the country are preventable and treatable.
Bode said that with the new laser machine, LUTH would be able to offer advanced eye care services. "With this technology, some treatments that take the patient two weeks to complete, will be done in a day."
He however appreciated Guinness Nigeria and Vision 2020 for their support in the pro curement of the machine.

Vision 2020 "We presented our challenges in service delive:ry to Guinness Nigeria who built the Eye Centre, and donated N7.5 million for the machine, while Vision 2020 and the hospital management teamed up to raise the balance of N5 million to acquire this laser machine."
'Aside from this newly acquired technology, the institution is also expecting another laser machine worth about N54 million. This equipment will be accessible tovarious departments and will help us reconfigure our out-patient surgery. "
Earlier, the Head of Department, Guinness Eye Centre, .LUTH Prof Folasade Akinsola said that the new eye surgery machine will enable LUTH treat more for patients with eye problems.
A lot of diabetic patients are being diagnosed with eye related problems and some of them need laser treatment. Glaucoma patients, cataract patients and also children with eye related problems are being referred to private hospitals in the past, butwith this new technology, their hope is restored," she remarked.
