Women Arise, an NGO, carries out free medical treatment on children of the Internally Displaced Persons in Abuja on Saturday.

The twelfth  round of the five-day maternal, newborn and child health week in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the second in 2015, was officially flagged off in Abuja yesterday with the theme, “A Package for a Lifetime for Better Health for the Family.”

Executive Secretary, FCT Primary Health Care Development Board (FCTPHCDB), Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed, at the flag-off ceremony, said the board, as part of its intervention programme targeting mothers, would distribute free drugs and conduct immunisation exercise from November 30 to December 4, 2015.

He said that during the week, mothers are advised to visit the nearest primary health care centre in their areas, where they would be offered free de-worming tablets for children from 12 to 59 months, as well as Vitamin A supplementation for  children from 6 to 59 months.

The executive secretary added that there would be antenatal care for pregnant women, HIV counselling/testing, birth registration and family planning programmes, among others, during the week.

The aim,  according to him, is an approach aimed at delivering an integrated package of interventions to ensure the welfare of women  and children. He said the FCT Administration was committed to the delivery of improved  and quality health care for residents, and solicited for the participation and involvement of  everyone  in all its activities.

He said that recently, the declining health status of under-5 children  was reported across states and the FCT, adding that although considerable achievements have been recorded in certain areas, Vitamin A coverage is still below the minimum target of 90 per cent in the first round of 2015.
