The Ekiti State commissioner for Health, Dr. Olurotimi Ojo, has advised parents to disregard negative believes about vaccine administered to children to eradicate polio and other diseases by allowing their children to be vacinated during the integrated measles exercise in the state.
Ojo who spoke at the official flag-off of the exercise at Okeyinmi Health Centre in Ado-Ekiti disclosed that vaccines given to children has no negative effects as being speculated by some people.
The 5days exercise with the them; "Our community Our future, Our future, Our World" began on Thursday which is to end on the 1st of February is in collaboration with Lion's Club of Ado-Ekiti Central in Ekiti State. According to Ojo, the exercise is a giant step by government of Ayodele Fayose and health care providers in Ekiti State towards eradicating measles in the state.
He said the programme is aim at educating parents to know that the vaccines are safe for children and has no any side effect, urging both parents, proprietors and proprietress of schools to allow their children to be vaccinated by the health workers moving around to carry out the exercise.
Dr. Ojo also advised parents present at the official flag-off of the exercise to use the opportunity wisely by bringing out their children to be vaccinated and also to return home and educate other parents that the vaccine is not deadly or has negative effects on children.
Also speaking at the event the District Governor, 404B-2 Lion's club International, Dr Funke Adebajo, who was represented by the Chairperson of Region 9, Lion Toyin Adesokan said the vision of Lion's Club is to see that measles is completely eradicated within 2-3yrs in the state.
Lion Adesokan said measles is a deadly disease for children that can cause polio and other related sicknesses and the aim of the exercise is to reduce if not eradicate polio and other unexpected sicknesses.
She advised nursing mothers and pregnant women to also come out and receive the vaccine, saying pregnant women are not left out because the vaccine is usually given starting from pregnancy stage.
