The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has endorsed and issued licence to MedEnhanz Resources Limited as an online continuing professional development (CPD) provider in the country. 

 

MedEnhanz is an online medical information company based in Nigeria, providing a web-based medical information and clinical reference tool for Nigerian medical professionals. Over the years, efficiency, effectiveness, sustainability and profitability witnessed by the financial and telecommunication sectors in Nigeria have eluded education and health sectors particularly medical care delivery. 

 

This development has, however, been attributed largely to inability to embrace digital revolution that has become the cornerstone of every human activity and existence. Also, since the MDCN mandated participation in CPD activities in January 2011, many physicians have had challenges acquiring up to 20 CPD units required for renewal of their practicing license.

 

Efforts to bridge the gap motivated MDCN under the leadership of the Registrar, Dr. Abdulmimni Ibrahim to accredit and issue license to MedEnhanz Resources Limited as an online CPD provider.

 

Registrar of MDCN, Dr. Abdulmimni Ibrahim said that efforts to bridge the gap motivated the medical council leadership to accredit and issue licence to MedEnhanz. Speaking in the same vein, the Chief Medical Officer at MedEnhanz, Dr. Dokun Dairo, said the purpose of the programmme is to ensure doctors regularly update their knowledge while also creating a path for lifelong learning in the constantly changing field of medicine.

 

MDCN mandated MedEnhanz to conduct a pilot study on delivering online CPD for medical practitioners in Nigeria with the aim of providing insights on technical feasibility and effectiveness, as well as serving as a reference point for MDCN to develop guidelines specific to deployment of online CPD in Nigeria. 

 

The study, Dairo explained, started toward the end of April 2014 and lasted for a period of one month using the MedEnhanz’s Learning Management System. 

 

“It was an exciting process that added another flavour to efforts geared toward raising the quality of care at every level of the medical service system through the professional development initiative.

 

” He said the pilot study confirmed that online delivery of CPD activities for medical practitioners in Nigeria is technically feasible as it has also demonstrated that webbased CPD is effective in knowledge gain and performance of practicing physicians in our setting.
