The management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Meta, has reacted to a statement credited to the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), calling for the resignation of the Chief Medical Director of FMC over the death of a final year student of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Miss Dazan Muatin Charity.
In a statement sent to The Guardian yesterday and signed by the Head of Corporate Services, Mr. Harrison Henry Etim, the hospital management absolved the institution of blame or complicity in the death of the student.
Presenting the sequence of events, the medical centre stated: “Patient Charity Dazan, aged 27 years, came in poor condition at 1.10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 with a nurse from Yaba College of Technology. The patient was very weak, complained of general body weakness and pain, which started on Sunday afternoon. She was referred from the Medical Centre of YABATECH. “Upon presentation, she was very pale, cold and clammy, anxious and gasping. We commenced emergency care immediately. The patient was still feeble and respiration gasping, blood pressure was undetectable. Oxygen therapy was commenced immediately and cardiac massage was done. However, all resuscitative measures carried out proved abortive. The patient stopped breathing at 1.20 a.m. (within 10 minutes of arrival).
“No amount was demanded or collected before attending to late Charity Dazan. The corpse was taken back by the same ambulance that brought her to the hospital. It is unfortunate that misinformation about the sequence of events have caused severe pain to relatives and friends of the deceased. We, however, continue to provide efficient healthcare services within available resources to members of the public,” the statement noted.
