Nigerians have been urged to always report erring member of Nigerian medical body to the appropriate quarters for proper disciplinary actions, as a way to check the prevalence of indiscipline, criminal negligence, among doctors, causing avoidable deaths to many citizens in the country.
The medical body has also called on the government to ensure the implementation of the Consolidated Revenue Fund as provided for by the National Health Act, the 1% of taxes being collected on, tobacco, breweries and telecommunication companies operating in Nigeria for the purpose of achieving the universal health coverage
At a post-National Executive Council meeting press briefing in Ado-Ekiti, on Sunday, the NMA President, Dr. Kayode Obembe, said that the NMA would work with Dental Council of Nigeria to collaborate with all relevant institutions /authorities to reposition medical education in Nigeria, in line with global practices. According to him, “Why many of our members could not be disciplined is that our people don’t know their rights. There is a Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria Tribunal where those that perpetrated professional misconducts can be tried. Negligence is culpable in law, so, the public must make use of this avenue”.
The medical body, which rued the dearth of medical personnel in the country, which ratio stands at one doctor to 6,000 patients, instead of one to 600 as recommended by the United Nations, called on the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to accredit more public health facilities for the training of interns.
While commending President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing core professionals to superintend over Federal Ministry of Health, the NMA called for immediate payment of 10 months arrears of relativity, while implementation of ‘skipping’ of doctors should commence by January, 2016.
