Dr Usman Bello, a senior medical consultant at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, has called for the integration of cancer treatment in the National Health Insurance Scheme.
He made the call while delivering a lecture at the 2016 World Cancer Day celebration in Kano on Thursday.
The lecture is part of activities organised by Civil Society for Cancer Eradication in Nigeria (CiSCANEN), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), to commemorate the day.

Bello said that integration of the treatment of the disease was necessary in view of the fact that its treatment required a lot of resources. “It is very unfortunate that cancer is not integrated into NHIS and this means that if patients have no money to treat it, they will die.
“So, government needs to integrate cancer treatment in the scheme to reduce the hardship of patients”, he said.
He also urged the Federal Government to allocate more funds for the treatment of the disease, saying that adequate funds for handling of the disease was imperative in view of its rising cases.
Bello called on the media to educate people, particularly rural dwellers, on the need for patients to go for treatment at the early stage of the disease.
“Ignorance of the disease, lack of money for treatment and fear of surgery and the belief that the disease has no cure, are some of the challenges which must be addressed,” he said.
In his remarks, Secretary of CiSCANEN, Dr Abba Balaraba, said that the organisation was established to mobilise local and international resources to fight the deadly disease in the country. (NAN)
