THE vision of halting the spread of HIV/AIDS to the next generation of Nigerians can only be realised if the Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of the ailment is given utmost attention by governments at all levels.
This was stated by medical experts yesterday at the 16 local councils of Taraba State when they hosted the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA)/SURE-P media team to the 62 health facilities in the state.
They stated the need for government at all levels to assist pregnant women have access to health facilities especially PMTCT, saying this would help the country to control the spread of the ailment to the next generation.
The health personnel include the Chief Medical Director of Jalingo Specialist Hospital, Dr. Rimande U. Joel, doctor in charge of Government House Clinic, Danga I. Danga, the ART focal person of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Jalingo, Dr. Aisha Adamu.
Others are Dr. Ibrahim A. Musa from the first referral hospital in Sunkani local council of Ardo-Kola and Mohammed Bala from Ummah Clinic.
They said the intervention of NACA/SURE-P immediately after the withdrawal of donors partners shows that the programme would be successful if well funded.
Out of the 62 health facilities in the state, it was observed that while 41 are PMTCT sites, the remaining 21 are secondary health facilities.
The Director of Communication of the State Agency for the Control of AIDS, Dr. Anthony Dorofi, said the agency would continue its efforts to control the spread of the disease in the state.
