The Chairman, School of Health Technology, Ofuoma-Ughelli, Delta State, Dr Nelson Ejakpovi, has decried the deplorable state of primary health centres in the country.
Dr Ejakpovi said this while inspecting the primary healthcare centre at Owa-Alero, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.
Accompanied by members of the governing council of the school, Dr. Ejakpovi observed that the primary health centre at Owa-Alero “has been abandoned despite the huge benefits the community was supposed to get from it and this is the situation in most health centres across the country.
“Primary health centres are vital to the healthcare delivery system. We cannot afford to toy with them because a certain level of healthcare services require that the health centres be the first point of call,” Dr Ejakpovi said, adding, “even in developed countries, there are primary health centres that are very close to the people but, we don’t have that consciousness. We need to build it and encourage people to use the health centres.” He further disclosed that efforts would be made to enable the state government acquire the primary health centre at Owa-Alero for it to serve as one of the practical training centres for the School of Health Technology, Ofuoma-Ughelli.
According to him, “in a nutshell, the place has been abandoned, nothing is working there. A community like this needs a very functional health centre,” adding that, “primary health centres are run by the local government but, the School of Health Technology is interested because we train people who are supposed to be masters of primary health care in community healthcare delivery, and it is in our curriculum to get these people to go to rural areas, stay with the people, observe their challenges. This is part of their training.”
