Members of the Osun State Association of Medical and Dental Officers, OSAMDO, yesterday gave government 10 days ultimatum to pay all arrears of salaries and cooperative deductions owed them or they would embark on an indefinite strike.
The association also dissociated itself from the memorandum of understanding, MoU, leaders of the organised labour signed with government, detailing how workers’ outstanding salaries and allowances would be paid.
Addressing newsmen in Osogbo, the state chairman of the association, Dr. Isiaka Adekunle, who was flanked by other executive members, said OSAMDO was not part of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC’s negotiations with government and as such, the dictates of the MoU would not be binding on it.
He also demanded that machinery be set in motion for immediate implementation of the revised CONMESS circular for medical and dental officers in the state.
Listing other demands of the association, Adekunle added: “The state government must clear the arrears of hospital running cost and restore the provision for same as it is not possible to run a hospital without running cost.
“Our association should be carried along in all subsequently negotiations of salaries and emoluments affecting our members as we are not members of the NLC.” He further posited that members of the association did not embark on strike before now because of the hardship patients are usually subjected to whenever hospitals are shut.
Adekunle however warned that the poor working condition and non-payment of salaries to doctors is making them mentally unstable, stressing that an unstable mind treating patients can be dangerous.
The association subsequently called for intervention of all concerned indigenes, urging them to be awake to their responsibility of checking government whenever it is embarking on policies and programmes inimical to the welfare of the citizens
